Freshman Democrat Admits Dem Leaders' Budget Includes the Largest Tax Increase in American History
Democrat Calls Out His Own Leaders, Contradicts Statements from Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Hoyer

For the past year, Republicans have highlighted the fact that the Democrats’ budget includes the largest tax increase in history – a tax hike for every American taxpayer that will cut the child tax credit, give everyone in the 10 percent tax bracket a 50 percent tax hike, reinstate the marriage penalty and the death tax, and even raise taxes on retirement savings. Democratic Leaders have routinely attempted to silence debate on this topic with Orwellian claims that the tax hike doesn’t exist.
Today one of their own Members admitted the truth in an unusually candid press release. Rep. Bill Forster, D-Ill. sent out a press release which blasted his own Leadership and the Democrats’ budget.

“I can’t support a budget, from either party, that raises taxes on the middle class. This bill hurts families all across the 14th District by eliminating the 10-percent bracket for lower-income taxpayers, reinstating the marriage penalty and increasing taxes on small businesses and investments.”

This statement directly contradicts statements from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who has said there were NO tax increases in their budget, and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who had the temerity to say their budget included “tax relief.” This is what Speaker Pelosi said:
Even the Democrats’ Budget Committee Chairman, Rep. John Spratt (D-SC), has attempted to claim there are no tax increases: “Let me say emphatically, this budget does not raise taxes.” (House Floor Remarks, 6/5/08). Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) responded today to the dramatic admission:

“I’m glad that at least one Democrat has finally admitted the truth: the Democratic Budget that passed last week included a massive, job-killing tax increase for every single American taxpayer. At a time when families are struggling with rising costs – especially the rising cost of gasoline, which went over $4 per gallon on average just yesterday – the last thing our economy needs is a tax increase, let alone the largest tax increase in American history.
“When will Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer, Majority Whip Clyburn, and Caucus Chairman Emanuel admit the truth and begin to work with Republicans to lower gas prices, provide tax relief, and help American families?”

As American families and small businesses face increasing food prices, rising health care costs, and gas prices now over $4 per gallon, the very last thing they need is a higher tax bill. But that is exactly what this Democratic budget would deliver: a $683 billion tax hike that will impact every taxpayer – from single filers and families to small business owners and seniors. No one is immune from the Democrats’ largest tax hike in American history, a fact that even Rep. Foster knows is true.
This week, House Republicans will unveil our economic plan to stop the Democrats’ tax increase, cut the pork, get serious about entitlement reform, and create new jobs. Republicans are making clear to the American people that if the Democratic Majority will not lead on these important priorities, we will.
